Since June 1st, the Regional Electrical Market began operations and at the same time, the Trade for shopping and selling electricity that was signed for 6 countries in the region, entered into force.

For the Regional Commission for Electrical Interconnection, the electrical market in Central America consolidates the energetic integration of the countries which conformed it; also it strengths the operation of the Electrical Interconnection System in the Central America countries.

“it is the culmination of the efforts that we started more than fifteen years ago and today it show us the availability of an electrical market that is four times bigger than the Costa Rican electrical market; and it is essential for our country to continue generating the majority electricity with removable sources”, said Teófilo de la Torre, Executive President of the Costa Rican Electrical Institute.

De la Torre added that it is very important to Costa Rica to establish an interface mechanism between the Central American environment and into the national area through a regulation approved by the Public Services Regulation Authority.

Now everyone has to take advantage of these new opportunities to get more security and quality in the electrical supply of the region, as well as lower prices for that energy, which will bring a bigger development for all of our countries”, mentioned de la Torre by a press release.
